 Composition & Active Ingredients
Codipront utilizes an ion-exchange resin technology to release the active ingredients slowly over time.1 The following concentrations are standard per 5 mL of syrup:
-
Codeine (as Codeine Resin Complex): Equivalent to 20 mg of Codeine Phosphate. It acts on the central nervous system to increase the cough threshold.
-
Phenyltoloxamine (as Phenyltoloxamine Resin Complex): Equivalent to 10 mg of Phenyltoloxamine Citrate. This is an antihistamine with mild sedative properties that enhances the antitussive effect.
Note: If the bottle is labeled Codipront Cum Expectorant, it also contains Guaifenesin to help thin and loosen mucus.2
 Dosage and Administration
Due to the sustained-release nature of the resin complex, the effects typically last 10 to 12 hours.
| Age Group | Recommended Dosage |
| Adults & Adolescents (14+ years) | 5 mL twice daily (morning and evening) |
| Children (6–14 years) | 2.5 mL twice daily |
| Children under 6 | Not recommended / Contraindicated |
Maximum daily dose for adults should not exceed 10 mL.
Clinical Specifications
-
Mechanism of Action: The codeine resin complex provides a slow release in the gastrointestinal tract, ensuring a constant plasma level of codeine.
-
Metabolism: Primarily metabolized in the liver via the CYP2D6 enzyme into morphine.
-
Duration of Action: Approximately 10–12 hours per dose.
 Safety & Warnings
-
Respiratory Depression: Codeine is an opioid; high doses or use in sensitive individuals (especially “Ultra-rapid metabolizers”) can cause slowed breathing.3
-
Dependence: Potential for physical and psychological dependence with prolonged use.
-
Drowsiness: May cause significant impairment of the ability to drive or operate machinery.
-
Contraindications: Do not use if you have asthma, respiratory failure, or are in a “comatose state.” It is strictly contraindicated for children who have undergone tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy for obstructive sleep apnea.
-
Alcohol Interaction: Alcohol significantly increases the sedative effect and the risk of respiratory depression.4
Storage: Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the resin complex is evenly distributed.
